Aventurine: Aventurine is a form of quartz characterized by it’s translucency. Deposits are found in India, Brazil, Austria, Russia and Tanzania. It is usually green but can be orange brown, blue or gray. Many believe that it is an all purpose healer used to reduce stress, develop confidence and imagination and improve prosperity.
Agate: Agate is generally found in volcanic rock and is a type of quartz. In many traditions, agate was believed to sooth the mind, still thunder and lightening, and bring victory over enemies.
Amethyst: Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz. The name comes from the Greek “ametystos” which had the meaning “without drunkenness”. It is a stone that is thought to bring calmness and clarity of the mind.
Carnelian: Most Carnelian originates as a dull brown agate. When it is heat treated, it becomes a burnt orange color. In Roman times, it was used to protect against envy, fear, and rage.
Citrine: The name citrine is derived from the color – the yellow of lemon. Citrine has been used to attract wealth and promote optimism.
Coral: Coral has been called the “garden of the sea”. It was once believed to be a plant but is now known to be a skeletal mass. It ranges in color from white to pink to red. Pink Coral is used to promote friendship and community. White coral is used to promote modesty and balance. Red coral promotes creativity, wisdom, courage and leadership.
Howlite: Howlite was named after Henry How, a 19th century mineralogist, who found it first, in Nova Scotia. It is believed to offer important spiritual values, such as discipline, trust, and openness.
Jade: Jade was known in ancient China as “yu”, the royal gem. It was regarded as a symbol of the good, the precious, and the beautiful. Most Jade comes in shades of green.
Jasper: Once considered a Warrior’s stone, it offers power and protection. Sometimes the colors are in stripes or bands, giving the stone a landscape quality. Jasper is a stone of physical grounding and balanced emotions.
Lapis: Deep blue in color, this gemstone was highly prized by the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. They believed that by meditating on the color, they could touch the robes of God. The meaning of Lapis signifies deep power, wisdom, and inner strength.
Quartz: The most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust, pure Quartz is colorless. Colored varieties include rose quartz and amethyst. The Roman naturalist , Pliny the Elder, believed quartz to water frozen after great lengths of time.
Rhodonite: Pink in color with flecks of black and gray, this stone comes from Sweden, Australia, and Vancouver. Rhodonite has traditionally been used to encourage generosity of spirit, relaxation, and revitalization.
Tourmaline: Tourmaline is called the gemstone of the rainbow because it can be found in almost any color. According to an old Egyptian legend, Tourmaline, on it’s journey from the center of the earth, passed over a rainbow and it assumed all the rainbow colors. It is the gemstone of friendship and love.
Turquoise: One of the first gems to be mined, it has been used for more than 2000 years. Usually it is bluish green in color. Turquoise was prized by the ancient Egyptians, the Aztecs, and the American Indians. It was thought to have properties that could protect against disease.
